Mandarin Duck

Aix galericulata

Although male Mandarin ducks have been known to spontaneously fight, especially over the right to court a female, these ducks also guard hens and ducklings until the ducklings have learned to fly. These ducks do not necessarily pair bond for life, but if both partners live through a breeding season, they will return to one another rather than establishing a new relationship with another duck.
