This year’s Cars 4 Conservation will be benefitting the fastest land mammal on the planet, the Cheetah! Clocking 0-60 MPH in under 4 seconds, cheetahs reach 60 MPH faster than a Ferrari Enzo, a McLaren F1 and a Lamborghini Gallardo. But cheetahs face a dim fate in the wild, where there are only an estimated 7,100 remaining. Cheetahs are threatened by habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and the illegal wildlife trade. Cheetahs have been forced out of 91% of their historic habitat, and much of what is left is fragmented into small areas bordered by human development. We have chosen the Cheetah Outreach’s Livestock Guarding Dog Project as this year’s benefactors. Most human-wildlife conflict occurs when cheetahs prey on commercial livestock as farmers have no choice but to kill cheetahs that threaten their herds. This program supplies farmers with working dogs that protect their livestock from predation by cheetahs and therefor saves the cheetah from the humans. The Livestock Guarding Dog program has been 95-100% effective in protecting livestock from cheetahs and cheetahs from humans!
